Long-term Tech Transfer success: What are the foundations?

Technology transfer is a complex process that, if not properly managed, can lead to unexpected bumps. Being able to navigate effectively through this journey is not an easy task. That’s why tech transfers have to rely on more than just project management.

Tech transfer is often perceived as a process where you “simply” move the manufacturing and testing process from one site to another, however, from my experience, the path to a successful pharmaceutical technology transfer relies on four key pillars.

1. Process Knowledge

Understand the science behind the process, notjust the steps. A deep understanding of Critical Quality Attributes (CQAs),Critical Process Parameters (CPPs), and the overall control strategy isessential to reproduce product quality consistently.

2. Manufacturing & AnalyticalReadiness

A receiving site must be ready from bothoperational and analytical perspectives. Not always the fit is perfect, and gapassessments are in order to understand possible roadblocks and how to overcomethem

3. Quality, Regulatory & ProjectManagement

Strong governance keeps everything aligned.Risk management, change control, regulatory compliance, clear timelines, andcross-functional collaboration are what transform technical exercise into asuccessful business outcome.

4. Documentation & Communication

Documents are important, but conversationsare equally valuable. Comprehensive transfer packages, SOPs, analyticalmethods, training sessions, and open communication ensure that both explicitand tacit knowledge are effectively transferred.

At the end of the day, technology transferisn't just about replicating a process, it's about ensuring that patientsreceive the same safe, effective, and high-quality medicinal product regardlessof where they are manufactured.
